Leinster and All Ireland Victories for Wicklow U14 Ladies Football Team

By on May 22, 2012

Wicklow U14 Ladies football squad had two successful outings in recent weeks taking home Leinster and All-Ireland titles. On Sunday May 13th the girls took on Wexford in the Leinster C final in Athy. After some initial confusion about the pitch, the girls settled quickly into the game and dominated from the start against a spirited Wexford side. Katie Boucher and Katie Miley opened the scoring for Wicklow and in the course of the half notched up 10 points, Marie Kiely added another two and a goal from hard-working Seona Michel left the half time score 1-12 to 0-3 in favour of Wicklow. Wexford continued to battle in the second half but there was no way through the Wicklow defence and they could only snatch another two points. Seona Michel, Niamh O’Brien, Katie Boucher, Katie Miley and Ellen Quinn added further points for Wicklow and the final score was Wicklow 1-20 to Wexford’s 0-5.

On Saturday May 19th the squad set off early to Kinnegad to participate in the All-Ireland Blitz where they were grouped with Louth, Limerick and Offaly. The girls took on Limerick in the opening game and had a seven point victory. They went on to defeat Offaly by a similar margin and had a comfortable third victory over Louth. Having won all three games Wicklow went straight into the final. Limerick and Offaly played for the second place in the final. The Limerick girls were victorious and faced Wicklow once again. The Wicklow side was the quickest to start and battled fiercely for possession, showing the fitness the girls have worked so hard to build up. Without the services of team captain Katie Miley and regular panel members, Ellen Quinn, Heather Cullen, Siona Michel, Fia Murphy and Maeve O’Kane, the girls showed great tenacity, spirit and determination to ensure the All Ireland Cup would be coming to Wicklow. After a gruelling battle in which the back line and the goal keeper, Chloe Dwyer, held firm and conceded no scores, and at the opposite end the Wicklow forwards managed to score 1-5 to leave the result in no doubt. The girls were delighted with their win and the managers were extremely proud of their achievement on the day and the workmanlike fashion in which they went about it. The girls and their management team now have a week’s well earned rest before they return to training for the next round of inter provincial games which follow their victory in Leinster on May 13th. Well done to the Wicklow U14 Ladies!
