Ashford GAA Club Notes

Under 16 County Football League Missed good scoring opportunities, a missed penalty and an incorrect call for a wide when it should have been a 45M free tells the story of how 14 man Ashford lost to League Leaders Kilcoole by just one point 0-8 to 0-7. Ashford had led by 0-5 to 0-4 at half time. This was a very strong Kilcoole team and they clearly demonstrated why they are undefeated in the league. Under 14 player Ross Quinn was top scorer with five points followed by Adam Hill and Conor Cunningham with single points. Had Conor been on form he might have scored at least three goals, Conor had created many chances with amazing runs down the middle of the field beating man after man but was unable to create his possession into scores. Colm Copeland had a very good game in goal with two excellent saves. Rian Sweetman Burke and Robert Clarkson were outstanding in defence with Jack Taylor supplying the back up. Patrick O’Donnell played well at mid field while Ross Quinn, Adam Hill and Conor Cunningham were the pick of the forwards. Ashford Team: Colm Copeland, Rian Sweetman Burke, Robert Clarkson, Michael Traynor, Fergus Ward, Jack Taylor, Sean Duffy, Thomas Kearns, Patrick O’Donnell, Ross Quinn (0-5), Adam Hill (0-1), Conor Cunningham (0-1), Mark Cullinane, Oisin Murphy. Footnote: Once again I ask the question, how a referee can officiate at a game with only two umpires available. It could have cost Ashford a share of the points at least. Ashford & Glenealy GAA Lotto There was no winner of this week’s Ashford and Glenealy GAA Clubs Lotto Jackpot worth €14,000 (09/07/2012). Numbers drawn were 4, 6, 21, 23. We wish Ronnie every success along with his team of Damien Byrne, Anthony Nolan and Pat Wogan. Under 14 County Football League Ross Quinn sensationally scored six goals and two points as Ashford beat Kilcoole by 8-11 to 1-5 in Kilcoole. Ashford had led 4-7 to 0-2 at the interval. The game was evenly balanced at 0-7 to 0-2 after twenty minutes, and then Ross Quinn was switched from midfield to full forward and within three minutes Ross had scored three goals, Ross also kicked a point from 45M, the other goal coming from Rian Sweetman Burke. Rian scored two goals and five points in total and had a great game in general. We must not forget Adam Melia who scored three points from the left half forward position and was the main supply source for most scores. Adam’s distribution was inch perfect, although isolated at times; he should be fed with the ball more often and at a quicker pace. Ross would have to be Man of the Match for his personal tally however this was a team performance with some excellent players. Luke Boyce had a very good game in goal, Kilcoole scored their goal in the last few minutes. Cal Connolly had an outstanding game in defence and he was closely followed by Keane Staunton. After Ross had moved to full forward, Rian Sweetman Burke and Thomas Kearns controlled midfield. The other scorer for Ashford was Gary McCann with one point. Ashford Team: Luke Boyce, Donal Ring, Keane Staunton, Colm Copeland, Cal Connolly, Adam Melia (0-3), Gary McCann (0-1), Rian Sweetman Burke (2-5), Ross Quinn (6-2), Thomas Kearns,Stephen Swan, Seamus O’Brion, Eoghan Copeland, David Lacey, Jamie Byrne, Kain Moore, Evan Butler. Referee: Tony McLoughlin. Footnote: No umpires available from either club.
